Maddy from Calico Carriage in Graham, TX will be here to
show us how to make old style quilts without cutting
diamonds and without any bias edges using half square
triangles.

began sewing when she was only nine years old.
She
began quilting in 1992.
She
started Calico Carriage Quilt Designs and Patterns in 2002
and has been lecturing and conducting workshops.
She

#1112, titled Shining Star.
You
can find her web site at www.calicocarriage.com.

President’s
Message
I
hope that everyone is enjoying a nice summer. I guess that
we can be thankful that it is not as hot as it is in some
parts of the country.
I
hope to have some news for you on a new meeting place at
our August meeting. We have checked out and called a lot
of different places. It is not easy to find a place that
fits all our needs for the guild.
We
are looking forward to the September meeting and a display
of the LORD’S Supper Quilt. Please tell your friends
about this.
We
are still in need of hostesses for some of the months.
Please sign up if you have not done so.
The
fair is coming up in September and I spoke to Patsy Smith,
and they need volunteers to help in different areas of the
fair displays. The fair work days are Sept 5-6 and Sept
18. If you can help, please call her at 692-8829.
Hope
to see you at the meeting.

September
Program
The
September program will be Dan Locke, who will show us his
quilt based on Leonardo DaVinci’s paining of the
Lord’s Supper. This quilt is composed of ˝ inch squares
and is 67 inches tall and 183 inches wide. He will explain
how he made it. Be sure and invite your friends to come
and see it. |
New
Meeting Location for September
The
Abilene Quilter’s Guild will have a new location for our
meetings in September. We have an agreement with St.
Paul’s United Methodist Church to use their Fellowship
Hall beginning with the September 11 meeting. St. Paul’s
is located near downtown at 525 Beech Street.
|
|
New
Website
The
Abilene Quilter’s Guild now has a web site. It is still
being built, but it can be seen at www.abilenequiltguild.org.
Gina Reddin is our designer. You can EMAIL
her for suggestions or questions. We plan to include such
things as our newsletter, quilt show information, and
other information for our members and other interested
Quilters. |
Quick
Trick Books
We
plan to have the books Quick Tricks & More
Quick Quilt Tricks at the August meeting for the
people who ordered them at the last meeting. The cost of
the books will only be $10 each. We had thought it would
be as much as $15, but were able to get them wholesale. We
will have a few extra copies of each book available for
sale. We can reorder more if necessary. |
|
Quilter’s
Classifieds
I
am considering placing a section for members of our guild
to buy, sell, or trade quilting related items. This would
be for individuals only and not for businesses. If you
think that this would be a good idea, let me know. –

fabric or a very small print in medium or dark that you
can spare for the Rehab Quilt, please bring them to the
next meeting. We will start the quilt in September. |
Redwork
Swap
A
new “redwork” swap is starting. You will sign up for a
month, then you will transfer a pattern that represents
that month, i.e. June weddings, Father’s Day. These will
go on 12.9 inch squares of good white fabric, using red
#304, after you have completed them trim them to 8 ˝”.
These will be due in February. You will then get 12 blocks
back, one for each month. |

Hope
Haven
Hope
Haven needs socks, and undies for children with school
starting. Food and household items are always welcome |

“
Quilters never cut corners.”
Projects
You
can still sign up for the Pizza Box and Round Robin swaps
at the next meeting. We will start these in September.
(If
you are not sure what we a talking about let me see if I
can explain. In the Pizza Box swap, each person makes one
or more blocks using the sizes for that month as well as
the theme and colors chosen by the box owner. Each month,
the box is passed to the next person on the list until
everyone has had every box. The owner’s box is then
returned. She then can complete her quilt using the
swapped blocks.
In
the Round Robin nearly the same rules apply, except at
each monthly exchange, you add a border around the center
medallion. The quilt owner starts with a center block and
each member of the swap adds a border in keeping with the
colors and theme of the quilt.) |
|
Charm
Squares
Charm
Squares are 15 tone on tone 6 1/2 “ squares.
(Members sign up at the
Projects Table at the monthly meeting to bring the designated color
of 6 ˝” blocks. You have to check the newsletter to find out how
many to bring each time. You sign up each time for the next
exchange.) |
