President’s Message

We have passed a busy time for the last couple of months with our first meeting at the new place and the fair. I am trying to locate a list of the winners for the quilt entries. (Note: I found them – Varnelle)

We had a very good turnout at the guild meeting this past month. The program was very good and the quilt was wonderful. I really enjoyed it and I hope that you did too. See you at the meeting.

2007 Quilt Show Report

Behind the scenes, all kinds of “things” are going on to get ready for the 2007 quilt show.

We will still have the big display floor at the Civic Center, but will be making a few layout changes.  They are simple changes, but we believe the flow of traffic will be smoother.

Again, we were able to book a Hoffman Challenge Exhibit and are hoping to show those quilts in a larger area. I thoroughly enjoyed the one at our last show and anticipate that this one will be as good, if not better!

In 2007, we will have a “honest to Pete” quilt teacher that has been on Simply Quilts several times. His name is Tom Russell, and he lives in Katy, Texas!!! You can see some of his work on the hgtv.com website. Go to hgtv.com and click on the tab that says “On TV”—a pop up menu will appear and click on “Shows A-Z”. Scroll down until you see “Episode Finder” on the left side of screen – pick the “Simply Quilts” show and in the “Enter Topic Box” type in QLT-1010. Then click on Scrap Bag Wars.

Our own guild challenge quilt will work a little differently this year, in hopes that more people will decide to enter their work. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a lot of challenge quilts to view this year? The pattern is a fan pattern. You can use your own fabric and embellish it all you want to. Instruction sheets will be handed out at the October meeting.

All of the Show committees have a chairman but one – and when you get right down to it – this may be the most important one!!! I am talking about the Displays committee – and we really need someone to agree to head up the committee that will be hanging the quilts!! The next Quilt Show Committee meeting will be November 27, 2006, at 6:00P.M.. at the Chimney Square Apartments – right before the monthly Guild board meeting.

Beverly Lynn and Judy Luther would appreciate the assistance of all our members in publicizing our quilt show this coming June.  Here are just a couple of ways we need your help now:

1.  If you are going to any quilt show, would you please be our messenger and take flyers for them to display at their quilt show.

2.  Please look at all the sewing/home & garden/quilting/etc magazines that you get and if they have a quilt show listing or travel guide, would you please give us the name of the magazine, their e-mail (if available) and mailing address.

You can call or e-mail Judy Luther at 325-698-2301 or hotrodquilts@yahoo.com or

Beverly Lynn at 325-690-1632 or cbnlynn@aol.com

AQG Website

The Abilene Quilters Guild now has a web site. It is still being built, but it can be seen at www.abilenequiltguild.org. Gina Reddin is our designer.

If you go to the website and find only the old newsletter, please hit the “refresh button” and it will update to the latest one. The refresh button is the circular arrow on the toolbar at the top of the screen.

Anyone who wants to submit photo to the gallery, give them to Gina and they will be posted on the website.

Care

“Please advise Sue Drumheller of anyone in the Guild that may be sick, or any closely related deaths in our Guild families. Just e-mail her at drum2@sbcglogal.net or telephone her at 695-3081 and give her the information.

Quilter’s Classifieds

Two of our members have websites where they sell goodies.

Kathryn Rister:  http://www.quiltkitsandquarters.com

Gina Reddin:  http://www.splintersandthreads.net

If any of you have quilting related items to buy, sell, or trade, let us know and they will be included. This could also be a good place to list needed fabrics, patterns etc.

Coming Events

If you know of more happenings around the state, EMAIL us.

Dues

Don’t forget that 2006-2007 dues are past due. If you haven’t paid yet, you may not get any more newsletters. Dues are $24 per year.

Projects

Jean updated the instructions for the Pizza Box swap. She passed out new instructions at the last meeting. If you did not get the new instructions, check with her.

There were 2 mistakes on the pizza box pattern passed out in Sept. Please make these changes –

#8 should be 12” not 121”

Add #9 – 8 x 12”

The Round Robin starts this month.

E-mail Newsletter

I am still working on the e-mail version of the newsletter. If you requested yours by e-mail, be sure and let me know that you received it so that I will know that I did it right. I can send it both as an email and as an email attachment. Remember to put my name in your address book so that your computer doesn’t think it is “spam” and delete it.

Redwork Swap

The Redwork Swap is filled for all 12 months.. They will be due at the meeting in February so you can get yours in March. Don’t wait until the last minute to get them done. Everyone needs to get all of them at the same time. Remember, you make 12 copies to swap. They do not have to be all alike – just all represent your month. If you have a question, contact Jean Moore.

Charm Squares

Charm Squares for October are 10 “pink” colored 6 1/2 “ squares.

Hope Haven

Hancock’s has a good sale on fleece in late September and early October. It would be a good time to buy fleece for Hope Haven Christmas throws for the children. We will make a throw with a pillowcase for each child. They can be any design you want to make. Keep them to no more than 1 ½ yards length. One yard makes a nice size for the small child, I will have a pattern for the pillowcase at the meeting, these can be any type of fabric, animals, etc. make cute ones.

If any of you knit or crochet, and would like to make scarves or caps for the older children or mothers, this would be nice.

Please put all items in a Christmas bag. The dollar store has some cute ones and they are only $1 any size.

Pillowcase Instructions for Hope Haven

Instructions are for 44/45” fabric. All seams are ¼”and all pieces are cut across the grain of the fabric.

Cut 1 – 28” x 44/45” for body of pillow

Cut 1 – 2 ½” x 44/45” strip for accent

Cut 1 – 9 ½” x 44/45” for pillowcase border.

Fold the accent and the border of the pillowcase in half lengthways with the right sides to the outside. The accent will be 1 ¼ x 44/45” and the border will be 4 ¾ x 44/45” after folding. Place the folded accent on top of the folded border, with the raw edges of each aligned, and sew.

With the accent side down, place the border/accent strip on top of the right side of a 44”side of the body fabric, align the raw edges and sew. Press the seams toward the body of the pillowcase. (The raw edge may be zigzagged to prevent raveling.)

Fold the pillowcase in half, matching the ends of the border and the ends of the accent strips to each other. Trim off selvages and any excess fabric that may result from differences in fabric width. Sew across the end of the body, then along the side. Turn right side out and press.

If these instructions are not clear, go to http://www.hoffmanfabrics.com/pillowcase/pillowcase.html for illustrated instructions.

Abilene Quilters Guild

Minutes

Meeting called to order at 7 PM.

The Program was The Lord’s Supper quilt by Don Locke. This quilt was made based on the Leonardo DaVinci’s painting of the Lord’s Supper. The quilt is 183 inches wide and 67 inches tall. The quilt was amazing and it was nice to hear Mr. Locke tell how the quilt came to be.

Minutes approved with one correction. United Methodist Church and not United Lutheran Church. Corrected. Motion made by Donna Jones and seconded by Barbara Knowlton. Approved by a majority vote. Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter. Motion to accept made by Alice Griggs and seconded by Susan Tolle. Approved by a majority vote.

After the program, we held our Show and Tell and drew for door prizes. Meeting adjourned.
