President’s Message

Hope that you have all stayed in out of the cold weather. I know that there were a few days that I didn’t even venture outside.

I hope that you are all thinking about the projects that we have talked about. The quilts for single mothers, the quilts for Cook’s Hospital. There are so many opportunities for us to help others. Also remember that we are still taking food and toiletry items for Hope Haven.

We ask that if you would like to bring something for a basket for Abigail Vancleave, that you do so. We are going to make a Care Basket for her and give her something fun to go through. She is eleven years old and so anything that little girls like will do.

Hope to see you all at the February meeting.

2007 Quilt Show Report

The Quilt Show Committee meeting was held January 29,2007, at 6:00 P.M. at the Chimney Square Apartments – right before the monthly Guild board meeting.

If anyone is going to an out-of –town quilt shop or show, you need to pick up some flyers and /or entry blanks. The flyers are ready now and the entries will be available by the next meeting.

Don’t forget to be thinking about your Quilt Show Challenge quilt for the quilt show. It’s not that far away, and we need lots of entries.

Care

We need to remember Abbey Van Cleve in our prayers. She is taking chemotherapy here as well as in Cook Children’s Hospital in Dallas. Carrie (her Mom) says that she is in good spirits and trying to attend school as much as she can, but tires easily.

We would like to send her a “care basket” from the guild. Please bring anything you think she would enjoy or she and her family could use for their trips to Dallas. Examples are such things as stuffed toys, nail care things, books, magazines, travel-size personal items, fun stuff for an eleven-year-old, cards, stationary, caps, snacks, coins for vending machines, phone cards, etc.

Susan Tolle’s parents are not doing well. She is in Houston visiting with them. We need to remember them in our prayers.

“Please advise Sue Drumheller of anyone in the Guild that may be sick, or any closely related deaths in our Guild families. Just e-mail her at sd222@cox.net or telephone her at 695-3081 and give her the information.

Sandi Tyson (Ph.370-3752) has requested that the Pregnancy Counseling Center has a need for baby quilts.

“They have many clients in their teens. Among quilts and blankets, they offer many other services and supplies. Most of the items they have for mommies and babies are donated. They are grateful for anything you have to donate. The look on the girl’s faces would melt a Scrooge’s heart. I will be glad to pick up and material or item you have. Bless you.”

Charm Squares- - The charm squares for January are spring prints -6 squares – 6 ½”

I did give four of them to children that live in a home in bad need of heat. There is only heat in one room. They loved them.

The Munday Chamber of Commerce

would like to invite our Quilt Guild to their Cotton Pickin Quilt Show February 24, 2007 at the Munday Elementary School. There will be a home cooked meal, over 100 Quilt, Viewers Choice Award, Vendors, Door prizes, Donation Quilt, Bake Sale, & much more. Time is 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Come join the fun.

Here is something I received from Alice Griggs and thought it worth sharing

GREAT IDEA: Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation.

They will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the
burglar or rapist won't stick around.... after a few second s all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there..... This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or prevent sexual abuse crime.

You know you are a quilter when:

A paper cut (or other minor finger bleeder) is as devastating as a broken ankle.

A "fat quarters" sale makes everything else on your shopping list unimportant.

A book of block patterns sits on your bed stand instead of a novel.

All the babies in your unit are covered in baby quilts.

All the paper scraps in our purse has quilt block sketches on them!

All the gifts you give, whatever the occasion, are quilts...

All your walls and beds are bare because you give everything you make away.

At 11:00 pm you kiss your husband goodnight and say "I'll be right up after I finish this block!" and the next thing you know he is kissing you "goodbye" at 6:00 in the morning on his way to work.

At the end of the month, you notice that the monthly checks are divided between supermarkets and fabric stores - pretty soon you notice that the fabric store check stubs are beginning to dominate the checkbook.

Before a major holiday or event, you can be seen either up at midnight, or in the car on the way to the event, sewing the last few stitches in.

Even the fictional books you read have quilt related themes.

Every quilt shop employee in a 100 mile radius knows your first name.

Every time your boss wears a particular shirt, you have to bite your tongue to keep from asking him if you can have it when he gets tired of it. –more at www.quiltbus.com.

Upcoming programs –

March – block auction (don’t forget about it) Bring your orphan blocks (and checkbook) to help raise a little money for the guild.

April – “Stamps By Katy”

May – New Square In A Square Blocks If any of you have quilting related items to buy, sell, or trade, let us know and they will be included. This could also be a good place to list needed fabrics, patterns etc

Mystery Table Runner 1299 Part 3

How to Make Half- Square Triangles

Pair together (right sides together) the fabric you wish to use in making Half-Square Triangles.

Using a ruler draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of

the fabric.

Draw a 1/4" line on both sides of the first line.

Stitch on the two outside lines.

Cut on the centerline.

Press light to dark.

Note: Each set of squares will make two Half-Square Triangles.

A tool called "Quick Quarter" can be used instead of a ruler. "Quick Quarters are available at your local quilt shop.

****If triangle papers are preferred for making Half-Square Triangles, 2" finishec papers are need. Follow manufacturer instructions for cutting and sewing.

Sewing

With rights sides together, sew the (S=12, M=16, L=20) 3" squares of Background and Color #2 into Half-square triangles.

Press seams towards the darker fabric.

Square to 2 1/2" squares.

Cutting

1. Cut last Background strip into (S=12, M=16, L=20) 2 1/2" squares.

A quick baby quilt that can be made in a very short time

Finished size 36” x 42”

A really neat baby quilt can be made from 34- 6 ½” charm squares and about 1/3 yard for inner border. 1 yard (generous) is enough for the back.

Take 12 – 6 ½” squares and sew them into a 3 by 4 block rectangle.

Cut 3- 3½” strips the width of the fabric. With 4 there is no piecing.

Sew on the sides and top. Piece leftover strips for bottom

Use these for an inner border (a solid color is good , but print might work)

Sew remaining squares into strips - 2 with 4 squares and 2 with 7 squares.

Sew the 4-square strips to the top and bottom and the 7-square strips to the sides.

If you are in a really big hurry, sandwich the quilt with back and front facing in with the batting on bottom. Stitch around outside, leaving an opening to turn it right side out. Top stitch around the outside edge. Quilt or tie as desired.
